How The Weather Affects Your Roof

Roofs are tasked with protecting your home from the elements, which means that your roof is left exposed to the weather, whatever the conditions, every day. Of course, this is the purpose of your roof – stand up to the tests that mother nature throws at your home.

As seasons change, so does the weather. Homeowners should be familiar with the different seasons and the weather that accompanies them. Being prepared for what Mother Nature throws at you and your home will help you preserve your roof and protect your home.

    Temperature Fluctuations

When temperatures rise and fall rapidly, it can wreak havoc on your roof. One of the most common forms of damage from temperature fluctuations is warped roofing. Warped roofing can be a serious problem because it can allow moisture to seep into your roof compromising it.

    High Winds

Shingle roofs are vulnerable to damage from extreme winds. If the wind is strong enough, it can lift shingles off of your roof. If your roof is missing shingles, it leaves the underlayers of felt and plywood exposed to weather. This can pose a real problem during a storm as your exposed roof will be soaked with water causing potentially catastrophic damage.

    Hail

One of the most common forms of storm damage that a roof can endure is hail damage. Hail can dent shingles and other roofing materials. While dents and divots don’t sound like a major concern, a roof with enough hail dents needs to be replaced. If hail is large, enough it can even penetrate your shingles, leaving your home vulnerable to future water damage.

    Water Damage

Potentially the most severe form of storm damage that your roof can sustain, water damage can mean that you need a new roof. Water will seep through your roof and into your home where it can cause structural damage and can even destroy belongings inside.
